Make Your Beauty More Eco-Friendly With These Easy Hacks

Make Your Beauty More Eco-Friendly With These Easy Hacks

Written by Alexandra Palmer

The beauty industry can be hard to keep up with. Always a new miracle product on the shelves with guarantees galore, ingredients we’ve never heard of and a famous face swearing it’s the reason behind their flawless complexion. Here are eight hacks to nail your eco-friendly beauty regime once and for all.

1. GET TO KNOW YOUR SKIN

The first place to start is to understand what you're working with and to get to know the skin you're in — it is after all completely unique to you. And the most effective way of getting your beauty regime down to a tee without putting your skin — and the planet — through unnecessary strain is to diagnose your skin type, so you can focus on a handful of go-to products you know you can rely on. Find your skin type here.

2. PROTECT YOUR SKIN MICROBIOME

A relatively new development in skincare, it’s worth getting to know your Microbiome and how you can restore the balance of good bacteria on your skin — the best place to start is a healthy gut. When your microbiome is balanced your skin looks and feels healthy but too much harmful bacteria can lead to skin irritation and conditions so it’s important to build up your skin's natural defenses.

3. NAIL YOUR ROUTINE

It sounds so simple, but getting the order of your skincare products right, is one of the most valuable changes you can make to your routine, not only to product performance but in terms of the lifespan of each product. Start with your lighter formulas first and take your time between each step to give your skin the chance to absorb the product.

4. DITCH THE PLASTIC

The bathroom is one of the worst offenders when it comes to single use plastic. From shampoo bottles, to ear buds, to facial cleansers the list goes on and on. However there are some simple steps you can take to reduce the amount of plastic waste from your bathroom, such as using refill bottles, swapping plastic products with bamboo and recycling your bathroom waste. Read our guide on how to reduce plastic waste in your bathroom here.

5. LESS IS MORE

It really is. Applying too much product is not only a waste (which goes against the sustainability model), it can actually block your pores or prevent your skin from absorbing it in the first place. We love this guide from Upcircle which breaks it down product by product. Cut down on waste and make your beauty products last longer by using the right amounts.

6. REDUCE YOUR WATER USAGE

According to Charity Water 1 in 10 people worldwide live without access to clean water. Cutting down on the amount of water you use is a surefire way to make your beauty routine more eco friendly. FInd yourself drifting off in the shower? We do. But if you are able to reduce your shower time by just a minute each day could save up to 60 gallons of water each month. Better still, go an extra day in between showers and give your skin and hair a chance to restore its natural oils while saving water. Win-win.

Another tip? Swap your liquid based hair and skincare products for solid bars. Liquid based products can contain upto 90% of water - which you are paying a premium for. Brands like SBTRCT and homework are helping us to reduce our personal impact on the water crisis with their range of shampoo, soap and cleansing bars. Don’t forget to turn the tap off when you are brushing your teeth or lathering that facial cleanser! It all makes a difference.

7. FEEL GOOD INSIDE AND OUT

Before you can look good on the outside, it’s important to feel good on the inside. The most effective way to make your beauty regime more sustainable is to live a healthy lifestyle and get your glow on from the inside out. A good night's sleep, regular exercise, plenty of water and a balanced diet is the recipe for skin success. Don’t know where to start with Nutritional skincare? 8. HANDS OFF!

It’s as simple as that. The average person touches their face 23 times an hour and it’s a habit that can be hard to break, but if you’re looking to make your beauty regime more eco-friendly, start at the source and stop the spread of dirt, oil and unfriendly bacteria to your face.
